[5] The “Íslenska” Mix

back when i posted my last icelandic mix, i mentioned the “icelandic sound” that most people associate with icelandic music, which was what that mix was about. i also mentioned that not all icelandic music conforms to that specific sound. this mix is here to give you a taste to another side of the icelandic music scene.

mix name: Íslenska
theme: another side of icelandic music
notes: no single files, because i’ve noticed no one downloads them. if i get over 10 requests for single files, i’ll upload them.

tracklisting:
01. Apparat Organ Quartet - Stereo Rock and Roll
02. Cosmic Call - Lightbulbs
03. Foreign Monkeys - Molla
04. Singapore Sling - Overdriver
05. Mugison - Mugiboogie
06. Kimono - Tomorrow
07. Hjaltalín - Debussy
08. Who Knew - Made Belief
09. Morðingjarnir - Sunnudagsmorgunn í Reykjavík
10. FM Belfast - Underwear
bonus track:
11. Sigur Rós & Steindór Andersen - Hugann Seiða Svalli Frá

athlete - chances

last night, in england, the season finale of doctor who aired. last night, in america, the fourth to last episode - vincent and the doctor - of the series aired. during that episode, in the last scenes, this song was played.

in short, this episode is all about vincent van gogh and his demons, plus some hope at the end.

i’m aware that this is a music blog, but this episode, in my opinion, is the best piece of television that i’ve seen so far this year. the last 20 minutes, especially, is enough to make you cry if you’re like that. i’m not going to tell you to download it. instead, i’m linking you to a place to watch it.

enjoy. the next mix will be uploaded in less than 24 hours.

[4] The “Ambientronica” Mix

i honestly don’t know what to say about this mix. i’ve been sick this past week, and this is the third (and final) mix i made to possibly post today. because of my cold, i didn’t really think of a song order, so don’t worry about putting these exactly how they appear.

if you were a huge fan of my icelandic mix, i think you should check this one out. though the sound isn’t exactly the same, the underlying chill of this mix might excite you. don’t think of it as too chill, though. it’s the chill that makes you move in your seat.

mix name: ambientronica
theme: ambient, electronic
notes: i’m going to pretend my putting two german artists (appart & polarkreis 18) on here helped them win against australia today ;)

tracklisting:
01. Zero 7 - Ghost Symbol
02. Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy
03. Efterklang - Monopolist
04. Under Byen - Det Er Mig Der Holder Traerne Sammen
05. Polarkreis 18 - Allein Allein
06. Burial - Dog Shelter
07. Amiina - Tvisturinn
08. The Cinematic Orchestra - Dawn
09. Apparat - Limelight
10. Blockhead - Carnivores Unite

[3] On Air, Force One

when you’re interested in becoming a dj at the radio station, you have to go through interning first. one part of interning is going onto other djs’ shows and doing an hour of board time with them, which is basically you taking over an hour of their show. the first dj i was assigned to had his own british specialty show, which is pretty much why i got assigned to him.

i’ve come to realize that a lot of people here don’t know the first thing about british music, so what seems familiar to you is completely unknown here. if i had felt like people knew more british music, this setlist might have been completely different, but you work with what you have to work with, and hope it’s good enough.

mix name: on air, force one
theme: the first set i ever played over the radio
notes: aside from the bonus tracks, this is the exact order i played the songs on air. the first bonus track, art brut, is a song i had included in my setlist, but due to the cd player messing up, it didn’t play on air. the second song, mark ronson, was the version of apply some pressure i had wanted to play, but we only had the maximo park cd.

tracklisting:
01. The xx - Intro
02. Thom Yorke - And It Rained All Night
03. Kasabian - I.D.
04. Muse - I Belong To You (New Moon Remix)
05. Kate Nash - Merry Happy
06. Editors - Fingers In The Factories
07. Editors - You Don’t Know Love
08. The Fratellis - Doginabag
09. Maximo Park - Apply Some Pressure
10. Klaxons - Isle of Her
11. Franz Ferdinand - The Dark of the Matinee
12. Kaiser Chiefs - Never Miss A Beat
bonus tracks:
13. Art Brut - My Little Brother
14. Mark Ronson - Apply Some Pressure (ft Paul Smith)

[2] The “Chill of Iceland” Mix

when fellow djs ask me what the theme of my specialty radio show would be, if i were to get one, i often say one of two things: british music or icelandic music. the reaction i receive when i say the latter is always the same: “really?” most people don’t realize that iceland has a large music culture. i know i didn’t when i first got into music from that tiny island.

this mix conforms to the “icelandic sound” that most people pick up on when they start listening to a plethora of icelandic artists. however, to show that not all icelandic sounds like what you’d expect, i’ve included a bonus song that exhibits a different sound. if enough people are interested, i will make a mini 5 song “other sounds of iceland” mix to post wednesday.

mix name: chill of iceland
theme: exposure to icelandic music
notes: song order isn’t too important in this mix. listen in whatever order you want.

tracklisting:
01. Múm - Weeping Rock, Rock
02. Bang Gang - Something Wrong
03. Ampop - Made For Market
04. Sin Fang Bous - Carry Me Up To Smell Pine
05. Sóley - Kill The Clown
06. Seabear - Drunk Song
07. Borko - Summer Logic
08. Amiina - Glámur
09. Frakkur - Dream Fyrir John
10. Ólafur Arnalds - 3055
11. Surprise Bonus Track - Click Read More To See It

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

the first time i heard about lost was when they were doing casting for characters. the first episode aired during my first year at college. i can count the number of times i haven’t been in front of the tv on an air date on both my hands.

in honor of lost ending, i’m doing a one off post of one of the first songs ever heard on lost. joe purdy’s song “wash away” was played during the last scene of episode three from season one - when hurly was listening to the cd player he found.

i’m going to miss lost. it was a six year long ride, and it was worth it. if you have lost stories, go to the main page of my tumblr and leave a comment,

if you missed the first mix i posted, check out my tumblr!

[1] The “Make or Break” Mix.

i love music. finding a new band that i fall in love with is one of the best feelings in the world. when i get excited about an artist, i want to spread them around to as many people as i can, and i feel like this tumblr is a good way to do that.

when i make a mix, i try to find a theme. when that’s picked out, i put the songs together, and i find an order for them. a mix should flow; thus, song order is always deliberate in my mixes. my intention is to have you listen to them in that order, but feel free to mix the order up if you think something else sounds better.

mix name: make or break
theme: songs with power
notes: it’s called the “make or break” mix, because this could be the mix that makes you decide whether or not to follow me.

tracklisting:
01. Why? - The Hollows
02. Imaad Wasif - Return to You
03. Grizzly Bear - I Live With You
04. Jónsi - Tornado
05. Owen Pallett - Midnight Directives
06. Andrew Bird - Anonanimal
07. Beirut - Guyamas Sonora
08. The Black Ghosts - Full Moon
09. Muse - Exogenesis Symphony Part 1 (Overture)
10. Martin Grech - Dali
