back when i posted my last icelandic mix, i mentioned the “icelandic sound” that most people associate with icelandic music, which was what that mix was about. i also mentioned that not all icelandic music conforms to that specific sound. this mix is here to give you a taste to another side of the icelandic music scene.

last night, in england, the season finale of doctor who aired. last night, in america, the fourth to last episode - vincent and the doctor - of the series aired. during that episode, in the last scenes, this song was played.
in short, this episode is all about vincent van gogh and his demons, plus some hope at the end.
i’m aware that this is a music blog, but this episode, in my opinion, is the best piece of television that i’ve seen so far this year. the last 20 minutes, especially, is enough to make you cry if you’re like that. i’m not going to tell you to download it. instead, i’m linking you to a place to watch it.
enjoy. the next mix will be uploaded in less than 24 hours.
i honestly don’t know what to say about this mix. i’ve been sick this past week, and this is the third (and final) mix i made to possibly post today. because of my cold, i didn’t really think of a song order, so don’t worry about putting these exactly how they appear.
if you were a huge fan of my icelandic mix, i think you should check this one out. though the sound isn’t exactly the same, the underlying chill of this mix might excite you. don’t think of it as too chill, though. it’s the chill that makes you move in your seat.
when you’re interested in becoming a dj at the radio station, you have to go through interning first. one part of interning is going onto other djs’ shows and doing an hour of board time with them, which is basically you taking over an hour of their show. the first dj i was assigned to had his own british specialty show, which is pretty much why i got assigned to him.
i’ve come to realize that a lot of people here don’t know the first thing about british music, so what seems familiar to you is completely unknown here. if i had felt like people knew more british music, this setlist might have been completely different, but you work with what you have to work with, and hope it’s good enough.
when fellow djs ask me what the theme of my specialty radio show would be, if i were to get one, i often say one of two things: british music or icelandic music. the reaction i receive when i say the latter is always the same: “really?” most people don’t realize that iceland has a large music culture. i know i didn’t when i first got into music from that tiny island.
this mix conforms to the “icelandic sound” that most people pick up on when they start listening to a plethora of icelandic artists. however, to show that not all icelandic sounds like what you’d expect, i’ve included a bonus song that exhibits a different sound. if enough people are interested, i will make a mini 5 song “other sounds of iceland” mix to post wednesday.
the first time i heard about lost was when they were doing casting for characters. the first episode aired during my first year at college. i can count the number of times i haven’t been in front of the tv on an air date on both my hands.
in honor of lost ending, i’m doing a one off post of one of the first songs ever heard on lost. joe purdy’s song “wash away” was played during the last scene of episode three from season one - when hurly was listening to the cd player he found.
i’m going to miss lost. it was a six year long ride, and it was worth it. if you have lost stories, go to the main page of my tumblr and leave a comment,
if you missed the first mix i posted, check out my tumblr!
i love music. finding a new band that i fall in love with is one of the best feelings in the world. when i get excited about an artist, i want to spread them around to as many people as i can, and i feel like this tumblr is a good way to do that.
when i make a mix, i try to find a theme. when that’s picked out, i put the songs together, and i find an order for them. a mix should flow; thus, song order is always deliberate in my mixes. my intention is to have you listen to them in that order, but feel free to mix the order up if you think something else sounds better.
i’m a college graduate who went back to college to dj on the radio (but never took her test).
i like music, and i like whoring it out to the people i know.
i want to whore it out to people i don’t know, too.
welcome to fuck yeah djay. a place where mixes will, hopefully, be posted once a week.
